Kingsland’s Pursuit of the Football State Title Sparks Unity and Excitement in the Community

A mere 3 miles outside of Spring Valley, just before connecting with Highway 63, a powerful sight reveals the undeniable success of the Kingsland Knights football team – the potential state champions of 2021.

The sign says it all: “Teams to remember play in November.”

Kingsland has remained undefeated throughout the season at 13-0, set to play against Nevis at U.S. Bank Stadium for the 9-Player state title at 10 a.m. this Saturday.

This incredible feat marks the first time since 2003 that Kingsland has reached this level, following back-to-back championship trips in 2002 and 2003. The community’s unwavering support is a testament to the team’s perseverance, especially after enduring a 51-game losing streak from 2012 to 2016.

The pride and enthusiasm for the Knights’ accomplishments are evident throughout Spring Valley and Wykoff through expressive signs, flags, and spirited football discussions.

From “Our Knights Are Electric” to “Knights Strike With Lightning Teamwork,” these signs encapsulate the overwhelming support and adoration for the Kingsland Knights in the community.

According to Kingsland junior linebacker/tight end Sam Howard, football has the power to unite people. The owner of popular Spring Valley establishment, Rack’s Bar & Grill, Karla Tart, acknowledges the long-awaited success, with local businesses generously sponsoring the team’s post-game meals.

As the championship game approaches, Spring Valley and Wykoff residents eagerly anticipate the showdown, with Isaac Hurst, the owner of Southland Auto and Diesel, remarking on the heartwarming support during the playoffs.

Generations are coming together to rally behind the team, including grandparents like Linda Meyer, the grandmother of star running back Beau Wiersma.

The overwhelming community support is exemplified through various signs and displays throughout the towns, celebrating the Knights’ journey to the state championship. Notably, the modifications made to a sign initially constructed in 1995 reflect the enduring spirit of the community’s unwavering support for the Kingsland Knights.

Joyously, store manager Greg Bernard of Sunshine Foods acknowledges the heightened spirits and sense of togetherness within the community as they band together to support the team.

Meanwhile, Dana Simmons, the principal at Kingsland High School, recognizes the unifying impact of the successful football program and its ability to bring families and students together to rally behind the team.
