The Warriors’ 5-1 start to the 2023-24 NBA season has sparked conversations about their enhanced team chemistry. This is in stark contrast to last year’s tumultuous ride, which began with Draymond Green infamously punching Jordan Poole during training camp.

Many players, including Draymond Green, have acknowledged the significant improvement in team chemistry compared to last season. Green went as far as describing last year’s chemistry as “awful” and “horses–t” earlier this week. Some blame and speculation have been directed at Jordan Poole, who was traded to the Washington Wizards for Chris Paul during the offseason.

However, Warriors coach Steve Kerr disagrees with this narrative. In an interview with 95.7 The Game’s Mark Willard and Dan Dibley, Kerr expressed that it’s unfair to solely blame Poole for the team’s struggles last year. Kerr praised Poole’s contribution to the team and emphasized that he hates to see Poole receive criticism. Kerr believes that last season was difficult for various reasons and shouldn’t be attributed solely to Poole.

The Warriors are already reaping the benefits of their improved team chemistry. They have a perfect 4-0 record on the road this season, a significant improvement from winning only 11 away games last year. Last season, it took the Warriors until January 13th to secure their fourth road victory.

So, what has caused this turnaround? According to Kerr, it’s primarily due to the addition of veteran experience. Kerr mentioned that even with limited playing time, Cory Joseph has made a profound impact in the locker room and on the team. The Warriors have struck a better balance between veteran players and young talents this year. Kerr acknowledged that last season, they had an excessive number of young players they were trying to develop simultaneously, which put undue pressure on them. In contrast, this year’s team has the second-most experienced roster in terms of average age.

Kerr commended the front office for bringing in Chris Paul, Dario Saric, Cory Joseph, and Jerome Robinson, who have all contributed to the team’s leadership and development. Kerr believes that the balance of the roster has made a significant difference in the Warriors’ success.
