In a stunning victory, Kentucky emerged as bowl eligible after limiting Mississippi State to just 218 yards of offense in a 24-3 win on Saturday night, breaking their road losing streak since 2008.
This marked the first instance in their series where the Bulldogs were held to single-digit points at home against the Wildcats.
Mississippi State (4-5, 1-5 SEC) has consistently struggled on offense since losing quarterback Will Rogers in their game against Western Michigan on October 7. Despite having Mike Wright as their quarterback, the Bulldogs managed to score only 7 points against Arkansas, 13 points in a loss to Auburn, and a mere 3 points against the Wildcats in the three quarters of play.
The Bulldogs’ sole score came during their third possession, as they embarked on an impressive 20-play, 88-yard drive that consumed 12 minutes and 29 seconds. However, despite the lengthy drive, they could only muster a 25-yard field goal by Kyle Ferrie.
Coach Zach Arnett emphasized the significance of red zone trips, stating, “With the way the clock rules are this year, possessions and plays are reduced, heightening the importance of red zone efficiency.”
During the game, Wright threw an interception that was returned 28 yards for a touchdown by D’Eyrk Jackson, extending the Wildcats’ lead to 14-3. This defensive touchdown became the fourth of the season for Kentucky.
With a total of 271 yards of offense, Kentucky (6-3, 3-3) managed to secure the win. Devin Leary completed 13 of 22 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns, while Tayvion Robinson contributed 91 receiving yards on five catches. Ray Davis rushed for 80 yards on 21 carries.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs introduced freshman Chris Parson, who displayed promise but failed to lead the team to a touchdown. This marked the second time in three games that Mississippi State failed to reach double-digit points.
Wright finished the game with 78 passing yards, completing 11 of 21 attempts and throwing one interception. He also rushed for 20 yards on 11 carries. Overall, the Bulldogs gained 71 rushing yards on 29 attempts.
Assessing Parson’s performance, Arnett praised his ability to push the ball downfield, stating, “He did an excellent job upon entering the game, exhibiting good passing skills and scrambling ability, which allowed him to keep some plays alive.”
BIG PICTURE
Mississippi State finds itself in a downward spiral in Zac Arnett’s inaugural season as head coach. The Bulldogs face the possibility of going winless at home in SEC play, with their only remaining opportunity for victory being the Battle of the Golden Egg against No. 10 Ole Miss on Thanksgiving night.
Kentucky, on the other hand, broke their road losing streak against the Bulldogs and snapped a three-game losing streak overall. They became the first team in the series since 2014 to secure a road win.
