Kansas City Current Faces Decisions in Offseason

In preparation for the upcoming 2024 season and the opening of the KC Current Stadium, the Kansas City Current have a number of important decisions on their plate. With key free agents and the search for a new head coach at the top of their offseason agenda, the Current aim to make strategic moves that will elevate their team.

The 2023 season brought high expectations for the Current, following their successful run to the NWSL Challenge Cup semifinals and the NWSL Championship in 2022. However, injuries hit the team early on, hindering their performance. Despite the setbacks, interim head coach Caroline Sjöblom steered the team to an 11th-place finish and another Challenge Cup semifinal appearance.

Looking ahead, the Current have five free agents on their radar, including 36-year-old defender Desi Scott. The team also plans to focus on building a strong coaching staff and finalizing the construction of their state-of-the-art stadium.

Reflecting on the season, Sjöblom expressed pride in the team’s resilience and commitment to playing attractive, possession-based soccer. Rookie forward Alexa Spaanstra showcased her talent, scoring two goals in the last two games of the season.

Defender Alex Loera also made a significant impact, returning to the pitch after overcoming a foot injury. She emphasized the team’s focus on finding joy in the game and building strong connections.

As the offseason unfolds, the Current have the opportunity to secure a permanent head coach. While former USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski is a potential candidate, Sjöblom has proven her abilities as an interim coach and is eager to continue leading the team.

The Current’s front office is also preparing for the upcoming free agency and draft, as well as the 2024 NWSL Expansion Draft, where new teams Bay FC and the Utah Royals will make their inaugural selections.
