Jalon Daniels has announced his plans to return for his fifth-year senior season at Kansas.
Daniels, who has started games at quarterback for the Jayhawks over the last four seasons, has been limited to only three games this year due to a back injury. Despite missing significant playing time, speculation about his future in football has been circulating.
On Thursday, Daniels revealed that he intends to return for another season at Kansas, as he can be granted a redshirt due to having played in only three games. His decision put an end to rumors that he might transfer or enter the NFL draft.
In a video posted on social media, Daniels expressed, “I’m going to be blunt. This season didn’t go as planned, but life comes at you fast and sometimes your story is out of your control. But I guess that just means I have unfinished business. My dreams haven’t changed. My goals are still there and my vision for my future is clear. I’m not done yet and I’m not going anywhere. Rock Chalk.”
Additionally, Daniels released a statement through Kansas Athletics confirming his return, stating his commitment to achieving his goals at the university.
Under coach Lance Leipold, Daniels has played a significant role in Kansas’ transformation, leading the team to improved performances in recent seasons. Before Leipold’s arrival, Kansas hadn’t achieved more than three wins in a season since 2009. However, the team’s record has improved in recent years, and Leipold may be a sought-after coach in the upcoming coaching carousel.
Prior to his injury this season, Daniels posted impressive stats, throwing for 705 yards and five touchdowns with a completion rate of 74.7%. Throughout his career, he has thrown for 4,297 yards and 31 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. In addition, Daniels has also rushed for 600 yards and 13 scores while at KU.
Notably, Kansas is currently 7-3 on the season and ranked No. 25 in the College Football Playoff rankings. However, without Daniels, the team has gone 3-3 with veteran backup Jason Bean at quarterback.
Unfortunately, Bean’s injury during last week’s game may force freshman walk-on Cole Ballard to make his first start in the upcoming game against rival Kansas State.
