Kai Trujillo Wins Daily Camera Player of the Year Award: A Remarkable Achievement

On November 22nd, Kai Trujillo clinched the No. 1 singles state crown during his senior year at Broomfield. Throughout the season, he stuck to one mantra: he didn’t have anything to lose.

This mindset carried him through the Class 5A state semifinal match last month against Denver East’s Trevor Hajek, where he rallied back after dropping the first set to secure his spot in the final match.

In the final, Trujillo dominated Grandview’s Justin Son with an improved serve and heightened aggression, winning in straight sets and only allowing Son to claim five games.

Reflecting on his final season, Trujillo credited his success to a stronger mentality and general looseness on the court. His focus was on finessing his technique in real-time and not stressing about the little inconveniences that can arise during a match.

Despite his accomplishments, Trujillo remains humble and is still deliberating on whether to continue playing tennis in college. His leadership and mentorship for his younger teammates have left a lasting impact on the Broomfield tennis team, and Coach Gary Melillo believes that Trujillo will succeed in whatever path he chooses.

“Kai’s success this year was the result of many years of dedication and effort to the sport, to his game,” Melillo said. “He’s very humble. I mean, he’s obviously an outstanding tennis player, but he’s very humble about it. He’s a great teammate.”
