Justin Fields expected to miss ‘multiple weeks’ with thumb injury: reports originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
According to a new report from CBS’ Jonathan Jones, Justin Fields is expected to miss multiple weeks due to his thumb injury. However, the Chicago Bears are not planning to place him on short-term injured reserve.
Fields was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Raiders after injuring his thumb in the previous game against the Vikings. Despite being inactive and the latest reports, head coach Matt Eberflus stated that the quarterback’s condition is trending in the right direction.
“He’s improving. His mobility is getting better, swelling is going down, and his grip strength is improving,” Eberflus said on Friday. “He’s trending in the right direction. He’ll be week-to-week. We’ll know more on Monday.”
In their upcoming games against the Chargers, Saints, and Panthers, the Bears may consider starting Fields, as indicated by Jones. This is one of the reasons why the team will likely keep him off the injured reserve list.
Meanwhile, undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent, who hails from Division II, has been given the starting role for Sunday’s game.
Bagent replaced Fields during the Vikings game, where he initially fumbled a sack that led to a touchdown. However, he later redeemed himself by leading the Bears to a touchdown drive, scoring a one-yard sneak himself. Unfortunately, he threw an interception towards the end of the game, sealing the victory for the Vikings.
On Sunday, Bagent will face Brian Hoyer. It was announced on Friday that Hoyer will start over rookie Aidan O’Connell for the Raiders. Jimmy Garoppolo, who suffered a back injury in the game against the Patriots, is unable to play for Las Vegas.
