CHICAGO–The Chicago Bears’ quarterback, Justin Fields, suffered a hand injury during the third quarter of their 19-13 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. As a result, Fields was unable to continue playing in the game.
In his postgame press conference, Coach Matt Eberflus informed the media that X-rays on Fields’ hand were negative. However, Fields will undergo an MRI examination on Monday to further assess the extent of his injury.
Fields’ injury occurred when he was sacked by Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter early in the third quarter. On a third-and-7 from Minnesota’s 48-yard line, Fields attempted to protect himself as he was being brought down while throwing the ball out of bounds. Unfortunately, Fields landed awkwardly on his right hand.
After spending several minutes in the medical tent, Fields walked back to the locker room with his hand covered by a towel.
Fields completed 6 out of 10 passes for 58 yards, with one interception, and also had eight rushing attempts for 46 yards. The rookie quarterback was replaced by Tyson Bagent, who holds several records in college football, including the all-time record for touchdown passes (159), as well as the Division II records for passing yards (17,034) and total touchdowns (171).
On Bagent’s second play, he was strip-sacked by Vikings safety Josh Metellus, causing a fumble. Linebacker Jordan Hicks scooped up the loose ball and returned it for a 46-yard touchdown on the home sideline.
Despite the setback, Bagent managed to score a 1-yard rushing touchdown and completed 10 out of 14 passes for 83 yards, along with an interception.
