ARLINGTON, Texas — Jose Altuve entered baseball history on Thursday night as he became the seventh player to reach 100 career postseason games. This achievement is not only a result of the increased number of playoff rounds but also a testament to the Houston Astros’ sustained success.

Altuve, reflecting on his experience, shared his biggest lesson from his postseason journey: “In the playoffs, a lot of things can happen.”

This statement holds true, especially now. The Astros faced a tough challenge in this year’s American League Championship Series, losing the first two games at home and giving the impression that they were no match for the dominant Texas Rangers. However, the team managed to turn the tide on the road, scoring a total of 18 runs in 18 innings and tying the series at two games apiece.

The Astros’ recent victory in Game 4 showcased impressive performances from Alex Bregman, Yordan Alvarez, and Jose Abreu, who together drove in eight runs. But it was Altuve who set the tone with three hits at the top of the lineup, exemplifying the spark he has consistently provided throughout his postseason career.

Teammate Bregman expressed his admiration for Altuve, describing him as a Hall of Fame player and an incredible leader both on and off the field. Altuve’s work ethic, positive attitude, and kindness towards everyone he encounters make him an outstanding teammate.

Altuve wasted no time making an impact in Game 4. On the third pitch of the game, Altuve capitalized on a changeup and hit a leadoff double, ultimately scoring on Bregman’s two-run triple. The Astros quickly took a 3-0 lead before recording an out.

Although the Rangers managed to tie the score in the third inning with a solo home run, the Astros responded with a four-run fourth inning. Altuve played an instrumental role in this inning, drawing a walk along with Martin Maldonado and contributing to a bases-loaded situation. The Astros capitalized on this opportunity, scoring runs through a sacrifice fly and a three-run homer.

Altuve’s performance in Game 4 marked his 10th career three-hit game in the postseason, tied with former teammate Carlos Correa for third place all time. Only Bernie Williams and Derek Jeter, legendary New York Yankees players, hold more with 12 each. Altuve’s near-home run and his 26th career postseason homer demonstrate his offensive prowess.

At 33 years old, Altuve joins an elite group of players, including Jeter, Williams, Ramirez, Posada, Justice, and Molina, as one of the few to reach 100 career postseason games. His consistency and contributions have played a crucial role in keeping the Astros’ contention window open, according to teammate Chas McCormick.

Altuve encountered some struggles in Houston, going 0-for-8 in the team’s two losses. However, he bounced back in Arlington, going 5-for-9 in their two victories. This turnaround reflects Altuve’s ability to perform under pressure.

Though Altuve appreciates the significance of reaching 100 postseason games, his sole focus remains on winning tomorrow’s game. The jersey he wore in Game 4 holds meaning for him, and he plans to keep it as a memento.

“Obviously it means a lot; it means the team’s been having success in the last years,” said Altuve. “But I think the whole focus I have right now is about winning tomorrow.”
