Jones seemingly frustrated with call to not attempt Hail Mary before half originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
After another unfortunate defeat for the New England Patriots, this week at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts, rookie quarterback Mac Jones seems perturbed by the team’s conservative play-calling.
Following an interception near the goal line in the fourth quarter, Jones was benched in favor of Bailey Zappe. Jones threw for 170 yards and failed to score a touchdown, marking another disappointing performance for the young quarterback.
Just before halftime, the Patriots had 60 yards to go with only two seconds left. Instead of attempting a Hail Mary, the team opted for a screen pass, a decision that Jones clearly questioned.
“No clue,” Jones said with a shrug when asked why they didn’t attempt the Hail Mary. “There’s two seconds left, we needed 60 yards, so, I don’t know.”
Why didn’t the Patriots go for the Hail Mary before halftime?

Although it would have been a tough play to convert, it would have shown aggression and a desire to score points, with minimal risk of the Colts returning the ball for points of their own.
Amidst the frustration, offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien was also caught on camera chewing out Jones after a bad read by the quarterback.
As the Patriots head into a bye week, many are left wondering if Jones will retain his role as the starting quarterback when they face the New York Giants on November 26.
