Big European Sports Star Could Leave PGA for LIV Golf
Reports suggest that John Rahm, a major name in European sport, might be on the verge of leaving the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, with a jaw-dropping £475 million contract in discussion.
Jon Rahm has expressed admiration for LIV Golf in the past, as his future in the PGA Tour is still up in the air.
Rahm, 29, is reportedly in talks with LIV Golf chiefs about a potential move from the PGA Tour. Although nothing is finalized, there are rumors that he could cash in on a staggering £475 million deal with the Saudi-backed circuit.
Rory McIlroy and other notable stars have criticized LIV Golf, while golfers like Ian Poulter and Phil Mickelson have joined the controversial tour. Meanwhile, Rahm, who clinched the US Open at Torrey Pines in 2021, has remained neutral about LIV Golf’s establishment.
Rahm previously voiced his interest in continuing to compete in major tournaments but also acknowledged the reasons why other golfing icons have aligned with LIV Golf. He even remarked that PGA Tour players should show gratitude towards LIV Golf last year.
Rahm has stated that changes made by the PGA Tour, such as altering its schedule and increasing prize purses, are partially attributable to LIV Golf’s influence. “I think, to some extent, we should be thankful for LIV happening,” Rahm said in December.
He continued, “I don’t think these changes would have occurred without LIV being in the picture. So, in a way, we should be grateful… I believe it wasn’t a bad year for golf in 2022. Yes, there may be some division, but I think we are progressing.”

“From this standpoint, many of the changes can be attributed to LIV’s emergence,” said Rahm. “I don’t view it as a bad thing. I just hope that the lingering negativity dissipates… LIV does its thing, and the PGA Tour does theirs.”
Rahm has also previously admitted that he can “see the appeal that other people see towards LIV Golf”. Yet he’s criticised the 54-hole format. “A three-day shotgun start, with no cut, is hardly what I consider a proper golf tournament,” the Spaniard has admitted. “It’s that simple.”
It remains to be seen whether Rahm will take the plunge and join LIV Golf. According to Bunkered, he’s been in talks with the circuit fronted by Greg Norman. A source has told golf outlet that Rahm is “closer to joining than he has been before”.
Rahm has already pulled out of the TGL, the new competition formed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in partnership with the PGA Tour. The two-time major winner’s decision to withdraw from the TGL has only increased speculation over his future.
