Jermall Charlo, the WBC middleweight champion, went up against Jose Benavidez in a 10-round non-title bout on Saturday night in Las Vegas. The fight served as the co-main event of the David Benavidez-Demetrius Andrade pay per view card and was originally scheduled to be held at a catchweight of 163 pounds. However, Charlo missed the weight, coming in over three pounds heavier. Despite this, the match was allowed to proceed after Charlo agreed to share a portion of his pay with Benavidez.
The 28-2-1 Benavidez took the offensive right from the start in the first round against the 32-0 Charlo. By the end of the round, Charlo had turned the tables and began controlling the fight. The third round saw a competitive exchange, but Charlo’s strategy of utilizing his jab continued to be effective. His jab started to take a toll on Benavidez in the fourth round.
While Benavidez had a good fifth round, Charlo may have had an even better one. Benavidez’ flurries were effective, but Charlo’s powerful and precise jab consistently landed. The sixth round was essentially target practice for Charlo, and Benavidez stepped up in the seventh. However, Charlo dominated in the eighth, delivering a relentless beating.
Benavidez fought valiantly in the ninth, but Charlo’s skill proved too much. Benavidez was more active in the tenth, but Charlo remained unfazed. After the final bell, the judges scored a unanimous decision in favor of Charlo, rightfully acknowledging his superiority in the match.
