Located in the breathtaking landscape of Sedona, Arizona, Seven Canyons Golf Course stands out as one of the most picturesque layouts in the Grand Canyon State. Golfers can enjoy sweeping views of the iconic red rock bluffs from every angle.
Interestingly, this stunning northern Arizona community is also home to an unexpected animal species: the javelina. While typically found in the southern part of the state, these peccary family members resembling pigs can be spotted roaming the area. Known for their long, stiff bristles and sharp tusks, it’s best to keep a safe distance from these creatures as with any wildlife encounter.
Javelinas are primarily active during the night and have a knack for turf excavation. Recently, they caused quite a disturbance at Seven Canyons, leaving the Tom Weiskopf-designed course in a state of disarray.
A video shared by the assistant superintendent depicts the havoc wreaked by a squadron of javelina, prompting a plea for help in finding a solution through any contact in the Arizona state government.
Come along with me on my carnage (I mean course) check this morning. What should be one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country is being destroyed by herds of javelina. If anyone has a contact in AZ state govt that can help us find a solution please pass it along. pic.twitter.com/XftywHtVCf

With its establishment dating back to 2003, the Seven Canyons Golf Course earned the recognition of tying for 178th place on Golfweek’s Best Top 200 residential courses. Additionally, the facility boasts an expansive 20,000-square-foot practice area featuring two tiers and 20 hitting stations.
Regarding javelina management, the Arizona State Department of Game and Fish website outlines the following:
- In extreme cases of property damage or aggression towards humans, the department may intervene by removing javelina. Nonetheless, this approach is seen as a last resort, with a focus on eliminating attractants to prevent recurring issues.
- Javelina are classified as big game species.
- The law strictly prohibits injuring or killing game animals, even when they pose problems, unless specific rigorous provisions have been met.
- Trapping javelina is illegal.
While Seven Canyons Golf Course does offer membership options, visitors can also secure tee times by staying at the Enchantment Resort or renting a townhouse within Seven Canyons.
