Exploring Jason Benetti’s change from the Chicago White Sox to the Detroit Tigers, he revealed the emotional process and factors behind this surprising move during an interview with the Athletic’s Richard Deitsch.
In the interview, Benetti expressed his emotional attachment to the White Sox and the difficulty he experienced when announcing his departure. He said, “Knowing the reaction of some people saying, ‘Why is he doing this?,’ I knew it was gonna be overwhelming. And I am so heartened by so many people reaching out personally.”
Benetti became the full-time play-by-play man for the White Sox in 2019 and is recognized as a rising star in the broadcast world, but he cited his passion for analytics as a driving force behind his decision to join the Tigers.
He explained, “[The Tigers] want to have the best telecast in Major League Baseball. And they want to do it by, number one, making sure that fans who don’t understand analytics have the opportunity to, if they want to.”
Benetti also addressed the tension regarding his national gigs and the ability to accommodate his baseball schedule, mentioning the ease of working with the Tigers compared to his situation with the White Sox.
