Jannik Sinner secured a victory against Holger Rune, maintaining his flawless performance at the ATP Finals and propelling Novak Djokovic into the semifinals in Turin.
For world number one Djokovic, who triumphed over Hubert Hurkacz in a 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-1 triumph earlier in the day, a win by Sinner was essential for him to advance to the next round.
The Italian powerhouse clinched a 6-2 5-7 6-4 win, topping the group with an unbeaten record.
Despite Djokovic’s chase for a seventh ATP Finals championship, Sinner dominated the round-robin stage, placing Djokovic in second in the group.
The 22-year-old Sinner, seeded fourth, demonstrated his capability by securing at least a second-place finish in the Green Group and a spot in the semifinals before facing Rune.
Greeted by the enthusiastic home crowd, Sinner took an early lead in the match before Rune launched a comeback, ultimately leading to a thrilling third set.
With an apparent lower back injury, Sinner fought through the pain, sealing a 5-4 lead in the third set before securing a historic victory over Rune.
He shattered records as the first Italian player in the tournament’s history to reach the last four.
Djokovic vs. Hurkacz
After Sinner ended his 19-match winning streak on Tuesday, Djokovic bounced back with a hard-fought victory over Poland’s Hurkacz – a replacement for the injured Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Despite lacking the opportunity to progress, Hurkacz delivered an impressive, unyielding performance against Djokovic, maintaining his ground on his serves during the first set.
While Djokovic dominated the tie-break to clinch the opener, Hurkacz broke the Serb’s momentum, taking a 4-2 lead in the second set before eventually securing the set.
Reasserting his control, Djokovic powered through to secure the match and set up a semifinal encounter with the winner of the Red Group, while Sinner will face the runner-up.
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has already secured a spot in the last four, as both Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz and Germany’s Alexander Zverev hope to qualify from the Red Group.
The ATP Finals hosts the top eight men’s players of the year, divided into two groups of four, with the top two from each group advancing to the semifinals.
