James Brittain-McVey EP takes on mental health

James Brittain-McVey from The Vamps aims to use his solo music career to inspire men to openly discuss their mental health issues. The 29-year-old, who has previously shared his struggle with body dysmorphia, features his experience in his debut EP, Manabi.

“It’s important to acknowledge the profound impact these issues can have,” he tells BBC Newsbeat.

His first performance will support the mental health charity Mind for their Music On Our Minds series, marking his commitment to advocating for mental health awareness.

“I’ve been vocal about mental health and have encouraged people, especially men, to speak up,” says Brittain-McVey.

Speaking before MPs in 2022, he revealed that societal pressure led him to undergo liposuction at 20, and continues to affect him to this day. He struggled to manage his diet and fitness routine for 10 years, needing time to realign his perception of his body and embrace a healthier lifestyle.

‘Managing the twists and turns’

The singer and guitarist has made mental health a central theme in his songwriting and is proud to have witnessed an increase in men opening up about their own mental health struggles.

“I’ve seen a noticeable shift in men reaching out to me, expressing their emotions, and seeking support when they’re having a hard time,” he shares.

Brittain-McVey reveals that a track in his new EP, “Dancing On The Head Of A Needle,” chronicles his mental health challenges from the previous year, while “Dance or Die” reflects the sustained discomfort he felt.

Concluding, he encourages those grappling with mental health and body image issues to confide in a loved one or a friend, emphasizing the difficulty of facing such challenges alone.

“I’m aware that I still haven’t fully resolved my mental health issues. I’ve learned that life and mental well-being are not straightforward but require adapting to the twists and turns,” he adds.
