Jalen Hurts still isn’t on the Eagles’ injury report

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts experienced an apparent knee issue during Sunday night’s game against the Dolphins. Surprisingly, the Eagles have chosen not to include this information in their official injury report.

Both on Wednesday and Thursday, Hurts is conspicuously absent from the practice report on the team’s website.

Considering that Hurts was seen wearing a knee brace during the victory over Miami, it seems logical for the Eagles to acknowledge his participation in practice despite the knee injury. However, they have chosen not to do so.

Evidently, Hurts has not received any treatment for his injury at the team facility. The proper disclosure of an injury depends on receiving treatment, as failure to list an injury could result in penalties if the league investigates and discovers the player’s name in treatment records, similar to what happened to the Jets in 2009 with Brett Favre’s concealed biceps tendon injury.

Chris Simms highlighted on Thursday’s episode of PFT Live that some players nowadays opt for private treatment outside of the team’s facilities. Consequently, the team would have no records of the player receiving treatment at the facility. For instance, Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady played the entire 2020 season with a fully torn MCL without the team disclosing it, possibly receiving treatment from Alex Guerrero elsewhere.

The difference with Hurts is that both he and coach Nick Sirianni have openly discussed the injury. So, it raises the question: why not just include him on the report since we already know about his knee injury?

The Eagles are taking a gamble by not disclosing the injury. The NFL, currently investigating the Falcons’ failure to disclose running back Bijan Robinson’s illness last Sunday, may eventually shift its focus to the Hurts injury. If, as Hurts claims, the injury occurred before the game, it would have been relevant information for fantasy players and those placing bets on Hurts’s specific Week 7 performance, particularly his rushing yards (which totaled 21 for the game).
