Italy Triumphs Over Australia to Claim First Title in Nearly Five Decades

Italy had reached the final four times since their win in 1976

In an impressive showcase of skill, Jannik Sinner dominated Australia’s Alex de Minaur, leading Italy to claim their first Davis Cup title in 47 years.

Matteo Arnaldi defeated Alexei Popyrin 7-5 2-6 6-4 in an intense opening singles match, securing Italy’s initial advantage in Malaga, Spain.

Sinner continued his outstanding performance with a remarkable 6-3 6-0 win over De Minaur.

“It has been an incredible feeling for all of us, obviously we are really happy,” Sinner exclaimed.

This victory marks Italy’s second Davis Cup win, their first title being in 1976.

Celebrations erupted as the Italy team rushed onto the court to rejoice with Sinner, who triumphantly raised his arms in celebration as De Minaur’s backhand went wide, clinching the win.

Australia, vying for their 29th Davis Cup title, have now suffered consecutive finals losses, having been defeated by Canada last year.

Sinner showcases his class in a triumphant effort

Italy arrived at the finals with high expectations, largely due to Sinner’s outstanding recent form.

The 22-year-old has emerged victorious in 20 of his last 23 matches, claiming titles in Montpellier, Toronto, Beijing, and Vienna, and even defeating world number one Novak Djokovic in the ATP Finals round-robin stages.

Sitting at world number four, Sinner had previously saved three match points against Djokovic to level the tie against Serbia before partnering Lorenzo Sonego to victory in the doubles, securing Italy’s spot in the finals.

Against De Minaur, Sinner displayed his intentions early, breaking with ease in the third game before sealing the first set with a dominant performance.

Exhibiting a relentless performance, Sinner faced just one break point in the match and converted five of his own 10 opportunities.

Arnaldi set the tone for Italy with a remarkable performance against Popyrin, overcoming substantial pressure to secure a crucial victory.
