CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Oliver Wahlstrom secured the shootout victory for the New York Islanders in a thrilling 5-4 win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.
Contributions from Kyle Palmieri, Hudson Fasching, Mathew Barzal, and Brock Nelson propelled the Islanders (6-6-5) to victory, breaking a seven-game losing streak. Goalie Ilya Sorokin was stellar, stopping 35 shots in regulation and overtime. An impressive shootout goal from Bo Horvat sealed the win for the Islanders.
Martin Pospisil, Blake Coleman, MacKenzie Weegar, and Yegor Sharangovich notched goals for the Flames (6-8-3), who fought hard and tied the game twice in the third period. Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves, and Sharangovich also displayed his skill in the shootout.
Despite being outshot 21-17 by the Flames after two periods, the Islanders led 3-2 heading into the third, showing resilience and determination on the road.
Weegar’s third-period goal from the point at 3:12 tied the game, but Nelson quickly restored the Islanders’ lead just 20 seconds later, showcasing the back-and-forth nature of the game.
Sharangovich once again knotted the score at 13:43 by tipping in a Noah Hanifin shot from the point, adding to the excitement and unpredictability of the game.
The Flames’ inability to capitalize on power play opportunities ultimately cost them the game, going 0-for-3 and 0-for-16 in their last six games, while the Islanders scored once on three power-play chances, underscoring the importance of special teams in close matchups.
