NEW YORK (AP) — In an astonishing comeback, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night. Sebastian Aho scored the winning goal just 1:14 into the extra period.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi contributed a goal and an assist, while Jalen Chatfield and Dmitry Orlov also scored for the Hurricanes. Andrei Svechnikov provided two assists, and Antti Raanta made 22 saves. With this victory, Carolina has now won four out of their last five games.
On the other side, Mathew Barzal notched a goal and an assist for the Islanders, with Noah Dobson and Simon Holmstrom also finding the back of the net. Bo Horvat recorded two assists and Ilya Sorokin made an impressive 44 saves. The Islanders had been enjoying a successful run, going 3-0-1 in their previous four games.
The game took a dramatic turn when Aho scored the final goal right after Raanta denied Ryan Pulock’s close-range shot in overtime.
Dobson kicked off the scoring for the Islanders with a backhanded goal, while Holmstrom added to their lead with a short-handed goal. Barzal extended the advantage with a well-placed shot from the right wing.
However, the momentum shifted completely towards the Hurricanes as Chatfield, Orlov, and Kotkaniemi each found the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3. Orlov’s goal was particularly significant as it marked his first goal for Carolina after joining the team as a free agent. Kotkaniemi’s power play goal came in the final minutes of the third period, capitalizing on Scott Mayfield’s penalty.
