Charles Oliveira showers praise on UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev for his impressive finish against Alexander Volkanovski.
Makhachev (25-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) delivered a stunning head kick knockout to Volkanovski (26-3 MMA, 13-2 UFC) in their title-fight rematch at UFC 294. Volkanovski replaced Oliveira on short notice after Oliveira was forced out due to a cut.
Oliveira (34-9 MMA, 22-9 UFC) expresses admiration for Makhachev’s striking evolution and his kicking prowess.
“This fight showcased the growth of Islam’s stand-up game,” Oliveira said in an interview with “The MMA Hour.” “His decision-making during the fight, starting with low kicks and transitioning to high kicks, was exceptional. All credit to him.
“I also want to give credit to both fighters, including Volkanovski, who accepted the fight on short notice. They are all fantastic fighters, and Islam is a deserving champion. It demonstrates his development as an MMA fighter.”
Although UFC CEO Dana White initially mentioned the plan to book a rematch between Makhachev and Oliveira, he later indicated that the rematch would depend on the healing time for Oliveira’s cut. Oliveira confirms that he has not received any definitive information regarding the rematch.
“No one has informed me yet,” Oliveira said. “However, they know my dedication. They know I am committed to becoming a champion. I will continue training and preparing myself. They are aware of my intentions. I don’t fight for money; I fight to make history and leave a legacy.
“Therefore, I will continue training until I am at 100 percent just as I was before this fight. When I am completely prepared, I will be ready to fight. I want the belt. It doesn’t matter who holds it. I want to claim that title.”
