Pascal Chimbonda’s Unique Coaching Journey in Non-League Skelmersdale United

Pascal Chimbonda’s appointment as the manager of non-League Skelmersdale United raised some eyebrows about his motivation, given his previous stint in the Premier League. He reveals, however, that he is not after money, as he currently receives nothing. Passion and eagerness to coach are what drive him towards this role.

Unbelievably, despite 148 Premier League appearances and winning a trophy with Tottenham Hotspur, Chimbonda still ended up coaching a side sitting at the bottom of the ninth-tier North West Counties League Premier Division. The question is, why? His simple response: “I want to coach, I like to coach.”

Chimbonda had found it nearly impossible, much like his fellow black former players, to secure higher managerial roles. Despite his qualifications and extensive experience, doors were not opening for him. Hence why Skelmersdale United became his avenue to “earn experience”, first-hand.

Only a few games into his tenure, Chimbonda already received a red card during his first game. “Not a good start,” he admits. Regardless, his passion on the touchline and the team’s subsequent win could perhaps signal his potential to succeed in this new role.

Chimbonda’s career transition into non-League coaching arose from his altruistic endeavors in running the PC39 Academy. Here, he helps young footballers who have been rejected by leading clubs’ academies, imparting his knowledge and offering them a second chance at pursuing their dreams.

Born in Guadeloupe, Chimbonda’s journey to football stardom was anything but conventional. Despite myriad challenges, language barriers, and racial abuse, his self-belief and determination led him to excel in the Premier League and beyond. And now, this same self-belief is propelling his coaching ambitions.

His relentless pursuit to move into management after years of rejection can signal a story of triumph over adversity for black former players. Despite the uncertainties and challenges he faces at Skelmersdale United, Chimbonda remains resolved to make the most of this opportunity and even aspires to manage at a higher level in the future.
