Max Holloway has no plans to rule out the chance of a rematch with Conor McGregor.
Holloway (25-7 MMA, 21-7 UFC) faced McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) in a featherweight bout at UFC Fight Night 26 in August 2013, where he suffered a unanimous decision defeat against the Irish superstar.
Since then, the two haven’t crossed paths. While McGregor is nearing his return from injury after being inactive since July 2021, Holloway believes that they will eventually have a rematch.
Speaking to ESPN, Holloway said, “Conor McGregor fights who he wants to fight, and I’m always in the mix for him. I was the only fighter in the featherweight division that he didn’t defeat, which probably irks him. So, we’ll see. I have nothing but respect for him. I’m glad he’s coming back. It’s great for the sport that he’s returning.”
“Many people are talking about (Michael) Chandler, but Conor’s curveball is way more nasty than anyone’s. Ultimately, we’ll wait to see what unfolds. I’m always on the shortlist for him, and I’m glad there are talks of his comeback. Everything is speculation until it’s a reality, until he’s walking into the octagon.”
Holloway also faced McGregor’s pre-fight interview with UFC Arabia ahead of his Dustin Poirier rematch in January 2021, prompting McGregor to say, “he’s in the pipeline for sure, me and Max will do it again.”
Holloway still holds hope for a rematch down the line, stating, “I’m on the shortlist for that Conor fight; I’m always in his thoughts. His fans know it too. The fight talks go on until the day we both retire. I believe you’ll see our rematch in the future, especially with his impending comeback.”
