Trent Alexander-Arnold expresses his steadfast focus on being “the footballer” rather than being confined to a specific position, as he continues to evolve in his hybrid-midfield role.
The Liverpool full-back has embraced a more central role during possession, leading to his selection as a midfielder in the latest England squad.
During an interview from the England camp with BBC Radio 5 Live, he shared, “I think for me it’s Trent the footballer, that’s what I have always seen the game as. You know, play the game not a specific position, that’s the idea I have always had when I have stepped onto the pitch.”
“Just do what the game needs, rather than what I need, specifically what I have been told to do, and the instructions I have been given, but also do what is right for the game. If the game needs me to be more defensive and more focused on defending space, or a bit more of a man marking setup, or running off the ball, or creating with the ball, whatever the game needs.”
The 25-year-old, who has faced struggles in getting a permanent place in the international team despite his club successes, is working to redefine the traditional concept of his role.
“I think with an idea of moving into midfield and the idea of playing in midfield, I still have those ideas in my head. Everyone sees the game differently. I have always had that view [of being a creator], and when I first transitioned into becoming a full-back, I wanted to change how it was played for me, not just for the game in general, but more so for me,” he added.
“How I can get the best out of myself by doing those things, how I can still perform to the level I need to, and I expect from myself, and offer those things to the game from a full-back position. To change how people interpret the role and how people see it.”
“I am sure in a midfield role that will potentially be the same. I want to create and do things on the pitch, I want to do what I am told to do and whatever role that maybe, I am sure I will find a way to make it work, that brings the best out of me.”
