‘Humble yourself’ and take time off after UFC 294 loss

Henry Cejudo believes it would be unwise for Alexander Volkanovski, the featherweight champion, to rush his return after UFC 294.

Volkanovski (26-3 MMA, 13-2 UFC) accepted a fight against lightweight champion Islam Makhachev on short notice this past weekend but suffered a first-round knockout loss. In the aftermath, Volkanovski expressed his recent mental struggles but insisted that he’s okay and plans to defend his featherweight title against Ilia Topuria in January.

Cejudo, however, advises Volkanovski to take his time and allow his brain to heal before returning to fighting. He emphasizes the importance of humility and focusing on preparation and legacy rather than ego and pride. Cejudo warns that Topuria, an undefeated finisher, poses a significant threat and could capitalize on Volkanovski’s vulnerability after a knockout loss.

Cejudo concludes by urging Volkanovski to consider the potential consequences of rushing his return and facing a talented opponent like Topuria with limited experience.
