How many times has India won ODI World Cup

The Indian cricket team has been a dominant force in the limited-overs format for nearly 50 years, solidifying their status as a powerhouse. Their success is highlighted by their victories in the One-Day International (ODI) World Cup, not once but twice!

The first-ever ODI World Cup was held in 1975, and India has participated in all 13 editions to date. This cricket tournament takes place every four years, now utilizing the 50-over format.

How Many Times Has India Won the ODI World Cup?

India has emerged victorious in the ODI World Cup twice. The initial triumph came in 1983, when India defeated the West Indies in the final match. It took nearly three decades for India to secure their second ODI World Cup title, achieved by defeating Sri Lanka in the 2011 final.

In India’s inaugural appearance at the 1975 ODI World Cup in England, played with 60 overs, the Indian cricket team, led by Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, failed to progress beyond the first round, suffering two losses and recording a solitary win.

India’s first match at the ODI World Cup took place against England at Lord’s on June 7. Sunil Gavaskar, albeit scoring only 36 runs off 174 balls, batted throughout the innings.

The subsequent 1979 edition, also hosted in England, did not alter India’s fate. Once again, they were ousted in the first round after losing all three group stage matches.

It was not until 1983 that the Indian cricket team claimed their first ODI World Cup victory. Captain Kapil Dev played a pivotal role in the campaign held in England.

India was placed in Group B alongside defending champions West Indies, Australia, and Zimbabwe. The Indian cricket team won four matches and lost two, progressing past the first round for the first time in an ODI World Cup.

In the semi-final, held at Old Trafford in Manchester, India defeated hosts England by six wickets, setting the stage for the final encounter against the West Indies.

Despite posting a meager total of 183 runs in the final match of the 1983 World Cup, a disciplined bowling effort limited the West Indies to just 140 runs, securing India their first ODI World Cup victory at the renowned Lord’s in London.

Mohinder Amarnath was honored as the Player of the Match for his contribution of three wickets and 26 runs. Indian bowler Roger Binny finished as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament, with 18 wickets to his name.
