How I became a Washington Mystics superfan, and why you should too.

Experiencing the electrifying ending to a tied game between the WNBA’s New York Liberty and Washington WNBA team, where Brittney Sykes scored the game-winner in sensational fashion, I can’t help but feel an almost cringey adoration for these exceptional athletes. Sykes and my actual girlfriend’s favorite, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, along with Natasha Cloud have become our shared Mystics spouses. Our newfound passion for “the W” started with casually attending the season opener in May and has now blossomed into a full-blown obsession.

Always a theater-kid and non-jock journalist, I never imagined sports would captivate me this way. But what’s drawn me in is the inclusivity and queerness that permeates the WNBA. With nearly 1 in 4 players identifying as gay, particularly Black gay players, and numerous queer fans and writers expressing their love, the league oozes excitement and relatability.

And the thrill of watching the games is equally enthralling. Whether it’s the physicality of the players, witnessing specific player dynamics like that of DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas, or feeling the crowd’s energy at the arena, each game is a fulfilling experience. And the personal identities and relationships of the players add another layer to this excitement.

From celebrations between players to the athleticism of the stars like A’ja Wilson and Sabrina Ionescu, the skill and charm of the athletes are undeniably captivating. To those unfamiliar with the WNBA, these are not just talented individuals; they are a source of inspiration and empowerment for the community surrounding the league.

But beyond the games, the journey of these players and their struggle for fair compensation and treatment are paramount. Brittney Griner’s detention brought attention to the abysmally low salaries of WNBA players. While the league’s popularity surges, the issue of pay equity remains a glaring concern. As fans, it becomes imperative to actively support the league, especially during the playoffs, for the further development and welfare of the athletes who continue to elevate the game.
