SARASOTA – The world of college basketball will continue to wait for the return of its iconic voice.
Dick Vitale, the Lakewood Ranch local and ESPN college basketball announcer, made the announcement on Monday that he must postpone the start of his 45th season as a broadcaster for the network. After successfully completing treatment for vocal cord cancer last month, Vitale initially planned to be back behind the microphone for the game between Kentucky and Miami on Nov. 28.
Say what?: Dick Vitale sets sights on resuming college basketball broadcasting following vocal cord cancer diagnosis
However, after consulting with his doctor, Dr. Steven Zeitels of Massachusetts General Hospital, it was determined that Vitale’s voice requires more time to heal. No specific date has been confirmed for his comeback, and his throat will continue to be monitored by his doctor.
“While I’m disappointed with the latest developments,” Vitale expressed, “I remain optimistic. The cancer has been defeated, which is incredible news, but the aftermath of the treatments has taken a toll on my voice and needs more time to recover. With the season underway, I am eager to return to college basketball arenas, calling the game I cherish and being surrounded by incredible colleagues and fans.
“I have to heed the advice of the medical experts, who have been so supportive, and with some additional rest, I am confident that I will be back for my 45th season at ESPN.’
