Michigan’s athletic department really missed the mark this weekend despite the effort to create the best game day experiences at college campuses across the country every Saturday.
Before the showdown between the Jim Harbaugh-less Wolverines and Ohio State, Michigan revealed its pregame schedule, which featured a flyover by a US Navy P-8 Poseidon.
The plane itself is a retrofitted Boeing 737, so it may not stand out in the sky. However, it’s noteworthy because of its military use.
The P-8 is a spy plane, as stated by The Navy:
The P-8A Poseidon is the U.S. Navy’s multi-mission maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft conducting long-range anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). P-8A Poseidon is the replacement aircraft for the P-3C Orion.
It’s quite unexpected for a spy plane to conduct a flyover at a college football game. The timing of this arrangement is particularly interesting, given Michigan’s recent involvement in a sign-stealing scandal.
It’s unlikely that the game day experience team knew about the scandal when they booked the P-8 for The Game. This coincidence could almost be seen as over-the-top trolling, although not everyone may appreciate the effort.
