WASHINGTON — The Holy Cross men’s basketball team under new coach Dave Paulsen has kicked off a thrilling journey.
After nearly missing a road upset at Siena on Monday, the Crusaders pulled off a remarkable win against Georgetown on Saturday, scoring 68-67, in front of 7,621 spectators at Capital One Arena.
Joe Octave took the lead with a career-high 33 points and secured the win with a 3-pointer just 57 seconds before the game ended, surprising the Hoyas under new coach Ed Cooley, who joined them from Big East rival Providence after last season.
HC effectively shut down Georgetown in its final two possessions to clinch the victory. This 1-1 win ended a six-game losing streak against the Hoyas (1-1) and marked their first victory over Georgetown since Jan. 25, 1975.
Octave also made an impact with 11 rebounds, marking his first career double-double. Bo Montgomery contributed 15 points, shooting 5 of 10 from the field and 5 for 6 from the line, as well as securing eight rebounds. Joe Nugent ended the game with eight points after a 3 for 6 shooting record (2 for 5 from 3-point range).
On the Hoyas’ end, Jayden Epps finished with 22 points and two steals, while Rowan Brumbaugh added 17 points and two steals. Supreme Cook boasted eight points and 10 rebounds.
Holy Cross’ home opener is scheduled for Tuesday against Sacred Heart.
