During a practice at the SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center, Hawaii basketball wing Matt Cotton engaged in an intense shooting session that lasted for eight minutes straight. He tirelessly fired shot after shot from different angles behind the arc.
This is a drill that Cotton was unable to perform just 18 months ago. A torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder prevented him from participating in such rigorous shooting drills during his time at Yale.
Despite having surgery, Cotton initially struggled to regain his shooting ability. He had hoped to be back in action by June 2022, but it wasn’t until September or October of that year that he was finally able to shoot again.
Due to the restrictions on play time in the Ivy League, Cotton wasn’t able to claim a medical hardship and play an extra year. Instead, he transferred to the University of Hawaii, where he’s become a key player in the starting lineup.
Now, as a part of the UH team, Cotton has proven himself as a versatile and reliable player. Standing at 6-5, he can effectively score from deep range and execute powerful drives while also adeptly defending multiple positions on the court.
Cotton’s determination and hard work have earned him a spot as a starter for the UH team, and he’s looking forward to showcasing his skills in their upcoming game against Central Arkansas.
Central Arkansas, who has had to play numerous road games this season, will face UH with a lineup that’s adapted to life without star point guard Camren Hunter due to a season-ending injury.
Despite this setback, the Central Arkansas team remains resilient, focusing on gaining valuable experience that will benefit them during their conference play.
This game presents an exciting opportunity for both teams to prove themselves, with the UH squad looking to bounce back after a recent loss and Central Arkansas seizing the chance to push through and remain competitive without their star player.
It’s expected to be a thrilling matchup, and both teams are eager to take the court and showcase their skills in what promises to be an intense and fast-paced game.
