Hathurusinghe urges young Bangladesh players to step up in ‘exciting’ period of transition in Ban vs NZ Tests

Head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe shared that it’s time for Bangladesh to embrace change as a new generation of cricketers step up, making the country’s current transition phase “exciting” ahead of the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand.

The team will face a challenge as regular captain Shakib Al Hasan, vice-captain Litton Das, and pace attack leader Taskin Ahmed are all sidelined for the series due to injuries and personal reasons.

Hathurusinghe emphasized the importance of moving on from senior players who have been with the team for many years, acknowledging the need for young talent to shine and carry the team forward.

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s recent struggles at the World Cup, Hathurusinghe expressed his focus on developing a team with young players, a phase he referred to as “a changing guard for Bangladesh cricket.”

Looking ahead to the Test series, Hathurusinghe stressed the team’s commitment to competing on both home and away grounds and highlighted the need to cultivate a deeper pool of players for every position in the team.

One of the challenges the team faces is the lack of red-ball cricket match practice since June, but Hathurusinghe asserted that the players have made use of the National Cricket League (NCL) matches for preparation.

An intriguing aspect of the upcoming series is the reliance on experienced spin bowlers Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who have been instrumental in Bangladesh’s Test performances over the years.

Hathurusinghe spoke highly of the spinners, emphasizing their role in the team’s strategy and expressing excitement about playing in a relatively new venue, Sylhet.
