Growth of Iowa’s Quarterback Deacon Hill: Kirk Ferentz Discusses Progress and Development

Week 13 Picks: Iowa at Nebraska | Andy Staples | 11.20.23

In the absence of their planned quarterback, Iowa has managed to achieve significant success this season. Kirk Ferentz attributes this to the continuous growth and improvement of Deacon Hill since he stepped into the role.

Ferentz praised Hill’s development as the Hawkeyes’ starter during a recent press conference. He acknowledged the challenge posed to Hill due to his limited experience, but with the support of the coaching staff and Hill’s dedication, he has shown marked improvement as the season progressed.

“When we first placed him in that position, we all knew he had virtually no game experience,” Ferentz explained. “He had been on the scout team for a couple of years in Wisconsin and only began practicing with us last spring. It has been a continuous process.”

“I believe he has gotten better each week,” Ferentz continued. “It has been a long journey, and the credit truly goes to him. Everyone has contributed, but we have witnessed remarkable improvement.”

Since taking over for Cade McNamara, Hill has completed 82 of 165 passes for 833 yards, six total touchdowns, and five interceptions. While these may not be the most impressive numbers, when combined with the Iowa defense, they have been sufficient to secure a 6-1 record with Hill as QB1 and have positioned the team for the Big Ten Championship.

Given the circumstances, it would have been easy for Hill to falter and not meet the team’s needs. Instead, he put in the hard work, demonstrated improvement throughout the season, and is now preparing to lead the Hawkeyes in their season-finale in Lincoln before heading to Indianapolis the following weekend.

“I think it’s a testament to his perseverance, he just kept pushing forward. His ball security has also improved, which is crucial. His awareness,” said Ferentz. “In the last two weeks, he has made some excellent throws and clutch plays.”

“It has been a journey. We’re not in the clear yet, but I can’t emphasize enough his attitude,” Ferentz added. “It’s a position that everyone takes notice of, everyone has an opinion about. When things weren’t going well, he could have given up, but he remained positive and kept working. It’s gratifying to see him receive some recognition.”
