Great Trail Golf Course saved by new owners who plan resort, brewery

Nestled in the sloping hills of Carroll County, on the outskirts of Minerva, lies a place where memories seem endless. Great Trail Golf Course, a 27-hole resort, has been a Minerva-area staple for nearly 55 years. Since 1969, this golf course has provided opportunities for golfers and others alike. The property has always been owned by the Fry family until recently, when Steve and Cathy Fry decided to retire and sold the property. The buyers, five Minerva natives Amanda and Andy Conrad, Steve Ogden, Nate Shriver, and Nehemiah Shriver, saved the property from potential auction and took over the keys in late October. The Conrads and Ogden used to work there for the Frys. With their memories of Great Trail, they couldn’t bear to see it hit the auction block and potentially become just another housing development. Determined to save the course, they rallied their friends, the Shrivers, and purchased the property for about $1.7 million. Now, they plan to enhance the resort and make it a destination spot for more people. They also intend to keep the family atmosphere intact and provide jobs to the community. Steve Fry will continue to advise the new owners, and Mitch Shick will oversee the course maintenance. The new owners already have plans to renovate and enhance the property, including adding a sister brewery called Great Trail Brewing Co. They also plan to renovate motel rooms, a banquet room, and the pro shop. Additionally, they will add a wood-fired pizza oven, an arcade, and conference rooms. They hope these improvements will bring more people to Minerva and showcase what the town has to offer. Despite the renovations, the golf course will remain open year-round, weather permitting. The new owners have a Facebook page to update conditions and events. They are excited to continue the legacy of Great Trail Golf Course and build upon what the Frys started.
