Gov. Mifflin’s Nate Radwanski tied for seventh in Class 3A boys after first round of PIAA individual golf

On October 16th, Nate Radwanski, a junior at Gov. Mifflin, showcased his exceptional golf skills by shooting a remarkable 2-under 70. This outstanding performance placed him in a three-way tie for seventh place in the Class 3A boys division at the PIAA individual golf championships held at Penn State.

Among all the competitors from Berks County, Radwanski claimed the highest position in both the girls and boys divisions across all classes.

Kayla Maletto, a senior from Wilson High School, who emerged as the champion in both the Berks and District 3 Class 3A championships, demonstrated her talent by shooting a 5-over 77. She secured a two-way tie for 11th place in the Class 3A girls category.

In the Class 3A boys division at Penn State’s Blue Course, Radwanski was four strokes behind the leaders, Aidan Franks of St. Joseph’s Prep and Wes Lorish of Plum.

An impressive total of sixteen Class 3A boys shot under par, adding to the competitiveness of the event.

In the same category, Daniel Boone’s sophomore, Chase Yenser, who clinched the championship title in both the Berks and District 3 competitions, began with a score of 76. He found himself in a six-way tie for 38th place.

Radwanski, who commenced his round on the 10th hole, managed a respectable 1-over 37 on his first nine. He then proceeded to impress with birdies on holes 2, 4, 5, and 9, despite a bogey on the 6th hole. This exceptional performance led him to finish his round with an impressive 3-under 33.

Meanwhile, in the Class 3A girls division on the Blue Course, Kayla Maletto faced fierce competition as she trailed behind Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth-Whitemarsh by 10 strokes. Gooneratne showcased her excellence by reaching 7-under through 14 holes; however, she stumbled with bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes, concluding her round with a 5-under 67.

Last year, Maletto finished tied for 11th place, and in 2020, she achieved a tied 12th position. Unfortunately, she missed the postseason of her sophomore year due to a hand injury. On Monday, she displayed a strong start by making the turn at an even-par 36; however, she faced challenges on the back nine and finished with a 5-over 41.

In the Class 3A girls division, Exeter freshman Giulia Weisser found herself in a two-way tie for 28th place with a score of 13-over 85.

Turning our attention to the Class 2A boys division on Penn State’s White Course, Hamburg senior Austin Zweizig and Berks Catholic sophomore Braeden Stringer both scored 6-over 78. This landed them in an eight-way tie for 36th place.

Leading the pack with an impressive score of 4-under 68 was Nick Werner from Wyoming Seminary.

In the Class 2A girls division on the White Course, Hamburg senior Erica Gerner, who emerged victorious in the District 3 championships, found herself in a two-way tie for 18th place with a score of 11-over 83.

Sasha Petrochko from Hickory secured a one-shot lead with a score of 72.

The final round of the championships will commence today at 9 a.m. on both the Blue and White Courses, where the top 10 performers will be awarded medals.
