A decade and a half ago, Marvel Studios shattered the norms of cinema by assembling the heroes of its standalone movies – Iron Man, Captain America, Thor – into an epic hero extravaganza known as “The Avengers.” Undoubtedly, you heard about it.

Netflix is now aiming to create its own Avengers-style production by merging stars from its renowned documentary series – “Drive To Survive” and “Full Swing” – for “The Netflix Cup,” a unique golf tournament in Las Vegas featuring live broadcast at 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening, marking Netflix’s venture into live sports programming.

The Netflix Cup is a groundbreaking event that will pair drivers with golfers for an eight-hole match play tournament at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. The top two teams will proceed to a winner-take-all ninth hole, offering an unorthodox twist to the conventional approach. The four F1 drivers participating are Williams’ Alex Albon, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, McLaren’s Lando Norris, and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, alongside renowned golfers Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas.

While the competitive golf element is present, the focus of the tournament lies in the live broadcast, serving as a testament to Netflix’s capacity to handle large-scale live events, as no previous event of such magnitude has been attempted by the streaming service.

Netflix is striving to avoid a recurrence of the “Love Is Blind” reunion stream debacle from last April, making it clear that it is not primarily fixated on acquiring the expensive rights to major sports like NBA basketball and NFL football. Instead, it is concentrated on small-scale live events and experiments, as affirmed by co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

The Netflix Cup will not only promote the two documentaries, “Drive To Survive” and “Full Swing,” but also serve as a testing ground for future live events within the platform.

It’s evident that Netflix is working to expand its live capabilities as it ventures into hosting live sporting events, including potential live broadcasts of boxing matches and more in the future. This growing emphasis on live content will endorse Netflix as a prominent player in the live sports broadcasting arena.

Ultimately, the Netflix Cup is more than just a golf tournament; it’s a testament to the changing landscape of streaming services and the potential addition of live events to their repertoire, marking an exciting chapter in the future of digital entertainment.
