EAST RUTHERFORD – While witnessing the closing moments of the Barclays Center scoreboard clock on Wednesday night, Darren Waller, the tight end for the New York Giants, expressed his excitement as the Las Vegas Aces celebrated their WNBA championship. Waller, not as a competitor but as the biggest fan of his wife and Aces’ star guard, Kelsey Plum, quickly grabbed his phone to capture the unforgettable moment.
Following the Aces’ victory over the New York Liberty in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals, Waller and Plum shared an emotional embrace on the court. The Aces secured their second consecutive WNBA title with a narrow 70-69 win.
“Watching me get hit makes her nervous because she’s more invested,” Waller shared at his locker earlier on Wednesday. Plum, who played for 40 minutes, contributed seven points, eight rebounds, and five assists to the team’s victory. Waller continued, “I, on the other hand, don’t get as nervous watching her. I simply enjoy watching her play and witnessing the effort she puts into her game throughout the year, regardless of the outcome.
“Obviously,” Waller added, “I always want her to win, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
Waller and Plum tied the knot in Las Vegas on March 4 and had recently returned from their honeymoon when Waller was traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Giants. As they prepare to host the Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Waller and the Giants are eager to end their four-game losing streak.
Plum, selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft by the San Antonio Stars, became a member of the Las Vegas Aces when the franchise relocated the following year. She also clinched a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics for the Women’s 3×3 tournament and has earned two WNBA All-Star titles.
“I want to see her achieve all her goals,” Waller expressed. “It’s amazing to support her not just as a husband, but also as a fan.”
