One of the most revered figures in Ohio State history is the legendary head coach Wayne Woodrow Hayes. From 1951-1978, Woody led the Buckeyes to 276 victories, including five national championships. Known for his fiery personality, Coach Hayes also played a pivotal role in escalating the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry to new heights.
Even after his passing in 1987, Woody’s legacy lives on in a unique way. Someone made the decision to keep the coach’s old home phone number active, allowing callers to hear a message from Hayes himself when dialing the old 614 number.
