Georgia Tech QB got called up for college golf tournament at famed Cypress Point

Colson Brown, a freshman quarterback for Georgia Tech, has yet to take the field for the Yellow Jackets this season. However, he recently made a unique appearance for the team at one of the world’s most renowned venues.

This week, instead of donning his shoulder pads and helmet, Brown traded them for his golf clubs.

Georgia Tech had committed to participating in two golf events. The first was the East Lake Cup held at the Atlanta Athletic Club. The other was the Cypress Point Classic, taking place at the highly acclaimed Cypress Point, listed as the second-best classic golf course in the United States according to Golfweek’s Best 2023 for top Classic Courses.

The Yellow Jackets needed a team of five players for the East Lake Cup, and their top five players took the field. In California, Georgia Tech required six players. However, with junior Ben Reuter redshirting this season, they only had five available players.

That’s where Brown came in. Brown, who played high school golf at North Augusta High School in South Carolina, stepped in to prevent Georgia Tech from having to withdraw from the tournament they had previously won in 2019.

The Cypress Point Classic is a two-day event with matches in the Walker Cup format, featuring foursomes and fourball sessions on Monday, followed by singles matches on Tuesday.

On Monday, Brown unfortunately lost both of his matches. He and Brady Rackley were defeated 4-and-3 in the foursomes by Texas’ Tommy Morrison and Jacob Sosa. They then fell to Auburn’s Brendan Valdes and Reed Lotter in the fourball format, losing 2 and 1.

However, on Tuesday, Brown will kick off the singles matches for the Yellow Jackets, facing off against Illinois’ Piercen Hunt.

While the rest of the Georgia Tech football team prepares for their upcoming game against Virginia, their freshman quarterback is representing the school on one of the world’s most famous golf courses. Not a bad way to start the week.
