Fox Sports will use drones in World Series broadcasts for the first time

In a groundbreaking move, Fox Sports is set to deploy a fleet of three compact drones during the upcoming World Series, marking the first time ever that such technology will be utilized in this prestigious event. While drones have been employed in live sports production before, this groundbreaking move by Fox Sports is a testament to the network’s commitment to innovation and delivering unparalleled viewing experiences.

Prior to this, Fox Sports has utilized drones during baseball games for coverage of the All-Star and Field of Dreams games. Moreover, the network has also integrated drones into its broadcasts of the USFL, with their first foray into drone technology dating back to 2015. This rich history of utilizing drones for production highlights Fox Sports’ dedication to pushing the boundaries of sports broadcasting.

For the highly anticipated World Series, Fox Sports has collaborated with Beverly Hills Aerials to customize a fleet of top-notch drones. These compact drones will be specifically deployed to capture key moments such as relief pitchers making their way from the bullpen, warm-ups between innings, and the dramatic departures of pitchers from the mound. With a particular emphasis on quality, Fox Sports has equipped all three drones with 4K cameras. However, the network has chosen to transmit 1080p HDR footage for an optimal viewing experience both in the stadium and for viewers at home.

Operating under a first-person view (FPV) setup, Fox Sports will strategically position the pilot in the outfield, either behind or between the bullpens. With one drone soaring through the skies at a time, Fox Sports ensures that it captures every awe-inspiring moment of the World Series. Furthermore, the stunning footage captured by these drones will be available for display on jumbo screens positioned inside both stadiums, allowing fans to experience the game from an entirely new perspective.

This year’s World Series coverage from Fox Sports will see the addition of the innovative UmpCam, a camera discreetly installed in the top of the umpire’s mask. This ingenious camera positions viewers right at the heart of the action, granting them the unique vantage point the home plate umpire enjoys. Fox Sports will use the UmpCam to showcase close-up views of ball/strike calls and capture the essence of pivotal moments on the field. Coupled with an impressive array of 52 cameras, including an overhead FlyCam, three DirtCams, 13 Super Motion cameras, and three RF cameras, Fox Sports is poised to deliver unparalleled coverage of the World Series.

In terms of audio, Fox Sports has gone to great lengths to ensure fans at home receive an immersive experience. The network plans to position over 100 microphones within each ballpark, capturing every ounce of sound from the game.

The much-anticipated World Series will commence on Friday, October 27th at 8 PM ET, as the Texas Rangers play host to the Arizona Diamondbacks in an epic Game 1 showdown.
