Former Wisconsin Quarterback Leads Big Ten with 6-1 Record as Starter

Wisconsin’s first offseason under head coach Luke Fickell and Phil Longo saw a major turnover in the quarterback room. Graham Mertz, Deacon Hill, and others were out, while Tanner Mordecai, Nick Evers, and Braedyn Locke came in, reflecting Fickell’s focus on building the program.

In year one, the results have been mixed. Mordecai battled a hand injury and has been decent, and Locke has shown promise in limited action. The quarterback room has mirrored the team as a whole: brilliant at times, yet painfully inconsistent.

Interestingly, former Wisconsin quarterback Deacon Hill is thriving as the starting quarterback for the Iowa Hawkeyes, boasting a 6-1 record as a starter after a recent 13-10 win over Nebraska. Hill, a four-star recruit in Wisconsin’s class of 2021, transferred to Iowa last offseason after appearing in one game as a Badger.

While Hill’s numbers this year may not be great, with a 49.7% completion, 882 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions in seven starts, he has shown that the offense can be lackluster and the defense and special teams can still win games. This was evident in the recent game against Nebraska when Hill threw a back-breaking last-minute interception with the game tied at 10, only for Nebraska QB Chubba Purdy to answer with an interception of his own, leading to a game-winning field goal for Iowa to improve to 10-2 on the season.

Surprisingly, Iowa, with its less-than-stellar offense, is slated to face the winner of Michigan vs Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship in a few weeks.
