Former Tar Heel Ivory Latta names Deja Kelly to her Top 5 ACC PG list

Ivory Latta, a standout player during her college basketball career at Chapel Hill, has left an indelible mark on the sport.

During her four seasons with the Tar Heels, Latta led her team to the Final Four twice (05-06, 06-07) and saw them qualify for the NCAA tournament every year. She currently holds a prominent place in the ACC record books for her achievements, ranking sixth in career 3-pointers, fifth in free throw percentage, and 15th in 3-point percentage. Additionally, she is UNC’s all-time points leader with 2,285 points.

Latta, a key player for the UNC women’s basketball team from 2003-2007, went on to have a successful 11-year career in the WNBA, playing for the Detroit and Tulsa Shock, Atlanta Dream, and Washington Mystics. She reached the WNBA Finals in her rookie season and was selected as an All-Star in 2013 and 2014.

Currently, the spotlight in Chapel Hill is on another talented point guard, Deja Kelly, who is recognized as one of the ACC’s top point guards.

As a college basketball analyst for the ACC Network, Latta has ranked Kelly as the third-best point guard in the ACC.

Kelly currently ranks behind Olivia Miles from Notre Dame and Georgia Amoore from Virginia Tech. Her goal is to help the Tar Heels secure their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. She has already been named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List, an annual recognition given to the best point guard in women’s college basketball.

So, just how impressive is Kelly? She was selected for the ACC All-Freshman Team in the 2020-2021 season and has been named to the All-ACC Team in the past two years. Her scoring average over the last three seasons is an impressive 15 points per game, with a team-high of 16.5 points last year.

With Kelly and Alyssa Utsby returning for the 2023-2024 season, the Tar Heels are poised for another strong performance.
