Buck Showalter is on the hunt for a managerial position in 2024, but the team he was vying to lead has chosen someone else.
The Los Angeles Angels have opted to bring in seasoned manager Ron Washington for the role. Showalter was among the top contenders for the Angels job, but the organization ultimately went with the 71-year-old Washington.
Washington served as the third base coach for the Atlanta Braves from 2017 and onwards, bringing a wealth of managerial experience to the table. He previously led the Texas Rangers as their skipper from 2010-13, achieving an impressive 664-611 record, along with two division titles and a Wild Card berth.
Washington takes over for Phil Nevin, who coached the Angels for a year and a half after Joe Maddon departed in 2022.
As for Showalter, it remains uncertain where the 67-year-old will end up next. Though there are several open managerial positions still available (Astros, Padres, Brewers), he hasn’t been connected to any of them as of now.
Showalter, who was let go by the Mets at the conclusion of the 2023 season with a year remaining on his contract, guided the club to a 101-win season and a Wild Card berth in 2022. However, the team’s performance declined this year, finishing with a 75-87 record. With the hiring of David Stearns as the president of baseball operations, the front office opted to pursue a different path.
After considering numerous managerial candidates, including Craig Counsell and Mark Kotsay, the Mets ultimately chose former Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza. Counsell, who was widely expected to secure the Mets job, accepted a position with the Chicago Cubs instead.
