Five Twins free agents want to return, but their future with team unclear

The Twins are riding high after triumphing in their first postseason series in two decades. However, they are bracing themselves for significant roster changes in the coming months.

Sonny Gray, an exceptional starting pitcher, will be a prized asset in the upcoming free agent market. It is expected that he will secure a multiyear contract. After the Twins’ season came to an end with a Game 4 loss against the Houston Astros, Gray received heartfelt farewells from his teammates.

“I truly hope we have the opportunity to continue playing together,” expressed Joe Ryan about Gray. “He has become an incredible friend who will remain an important part of our lives. He is not only an extraordinary person, but also an exceptional player. It’s tough seeing him go. Free agency is quite unpredictable. Hopefully, we can bring him back to this team. He is truly special.”

Following the conclusion of the World Series, five players on the Twins’ postseason roster are set to become free agents: Gray, Kenta Maeda, Emilio Pagán, Michael A. Taylor, and Donovan Solano. All of these players have expressed their desire to return, but they are aware that Wednesday may have marked their final day with the club.

“This is my first experience with free agency,” shared Maeda through interpreter Dai Sekizaki. “After coming back from Tommy John surgery and the injured list, I feel that I have positioned myself well. From midseason until the end, I performed fairly well. I am excited about what the future holds, but we will see how it plays out.”

Despite being defeated by the Astros in four games during the American League Division Series, each impending free agent expressed optimism about the Twins’ future. However, they acknowledged that the final decision lies with the Twins front office.

“I’m not sure,” Maeda responded when asked about his expectations of returning. “I have a deep adoration for the Twins, from the president and general manager to the coaches and staff. Everyone is exceptional.”

Taylor added, “I truly hope so. I have immensely enjoyed my time here. The organization is filled with individuals of high caliber. The chemistry within the clubhouse and locker room is remarkable. We all connect effortlessly.”
