Breaking News: Boogie Fland, a highly sought-after five-star guard, has made his commitment to play for John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats. Fland’s decision comes after a tough battle between Kentucky and Indiana, with Alabama also in the mix. However, in the end, Fland was won over by Calipari and the incredible setup at Kentucky.

During his visit to the university, Fland was blown away by the facilities and the close proximity of the gym to the housing lodge. He bonded with his host, D.J. Wagner, with whom he had previously played for USA Basketball. Witnessing the intense practices and workouts further convinced Fland that Kentucky was the right choice for him.

Kentucky’s pursuit of Fland began early, with multiple coaches attending his high school games and making him a top priority. Calipari’s Hall of Fame status and genuine care for his players also played a significant role in Fland’s decision. The coach’s sense of humor and spot-on jokes added to the positive experience for Fland.

Standing at 6-foot-3, Fland is an exceptional point guard and ranks No. 18 overall in the ESPN 100 for the 2024 class. He demonstrated his skills and versatility as a member of the PSA Cardinals, averaging 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 22 games. Fland’s dedication to his craft is evident, as he studies and draws inspiration from NBA players like Darius Garland, Jamal Murray, Kyrie Irving, and Sharife Cooper.

Known for his speed and burst, Fland puts immense pressure on defenses in transition. In half-court sets, he showcases his decision-making abilities, either scoring inside or finding open teammates with his excellent passing skills. Fland’s ability to read and manipulate defenses in ball screens further adds to his overall basketball IQ.

While Fland is still developing as a shooter, he possesses range and can be deadly from the midrange. His free-throw shooting is already impressive, averaging 81.3% during the summer. Fland’s slender frame does make him susceptible to being bumped off the ball, so adding strength will be crucial for his continued growth.

Coaches and teammates speak highly of Fland’s work ethic and dedication to the game. Archbishop Stepinac coach Pat Massaroni describes him as a “great kid” who loves being in the gym and putting in the work.

With his commitment, Fland becomes the 15th five-star point guard to choose Kentucky under Calipari’s tenure. Kentucky is actively pursuing other top recruits, including Somto Cyril, Jayden Quaintance, Karter Knox, Pat Ngongba, and Billy Richmond. Their recent recruitment of elite wing V.J. Edgecombe demonstrates the team’s ambition and commitment to building a powerhouse lineup.
