The Los Angeles Chargers’ quarterback, Justin Herbert, showed up to practice on Wednesday with a different look. Absent was the glove he had been wearing on his left hand since fracturing his middle finger during a victorious Week Four match against the Raiders. Although Herbert’s digit was still taped up, he revealed that he is edging closer to a full recovery as they head into Week Eight.
“Every day it’s getting better,” shared Herbert, as reported by Elliott Teaford of the Orange County Register. “We’re coming up on four weeks, so I’m doing everything I can to minimize the pain and ensure my safety on the field.”
During the Raiders game, Herbert experienced a career-low of only 13 successful completions. Last Sunday’s loss against the Chiefs saw him manage 17 completions, the second-lowest on his record. While it would be unfair to attribute every struggle to the injury alone, considering the absence of center Corey Linsley and wide receiver Mike Williams, it is evident that changes need to be made soon.
“I believe there are multiple areas we can improve in,” expressed Herbert. “We’ve missed out on some great opportunities, and I, personally, have had my fair share of missed chances. It all begins with us recognizing the position we’re in. The coaches have done an exceptional job of positioning us for victory and success. It’s up to us as players, and ultimately, it’s up to me. We won’t resort to pointing fingers. Instead, we’ll grow stronger because of these challenges. There is plenty of football left to be played. I feel incredibly grateful and fortunate to be part of this team and locker room. We have a group of dedicated professionals, and we look forward to the upcoming challenge.”
This week’s challenge presents itself in the form of a home game against the Bears on Sunday night. Failing to secure a win in that match would intensify the pressure across Los Angeles.
