The Arkansas State men’s basketball team secured a resounding 75-58 victory against UT Rio Grande Valley, showcasing a balanced attack and a scorching start at the Acrisure Invitational on Saturday. A-State (2-4) saw six players scoring nine or more points, surpassing the Vaqueros (2-5) in rebounds with a 50-34 advantage. The Red Wolves made 40.7 percent of their field goals and nailed 41.4 percent of their 3-pointers.
Freddy Hicks emerged as the top scorer, amassing 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Dyondre Dominguez also shone with a double-double performance of 11 points and 15 rebounds. Izaiyah Nelson provided a crucial spark off the bench with 12 points and nine rebounds. Avery Felts, Julian Lual, and Taryn Todd each contributed nine points to the Red Wolves’ triumph.
A-State held UTRGV to just 31.7 percent from the field and 11.1 percent from 3-point range. J.J. Howard led the Vaqueros with 16 points.
The Red Wolves dominated the first half, shooting at an impressive 51.5 percent while limiting the Vaqueros to 18.5 percent. A-State built a commanding lead, which eventually resulted in a 51-17 scoreline by halftime.
Although UTRGV attempted a second-half comeback, A-State maintained their lead and sealed the victory. Up next, Arkansas State will host Jackson State on Tuesday, immediately following the A-State women’s basketball contest against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 5 p.m.
