The Flyers have released their 2023-24 season-opening roster before the 5 p.m. ET deadline on Monday.
To begin the season, the team will have 13 forwards, seven defensemen, and three goalies.
Exciting prospects Bobby Brink, Tyson Foerster, Egor Zamula, and Emil Andrae have all made it onto the roster.
Rasmus Ristolainen is still dealing with an injury and will start the year on injured reserve. Although the specifics of his injury are undisclosed, it doesn’t appear to be too serious. After missing the team’s final preseason game and a subsequent practice, Ristolainen returned to the ice and performed well, according to head coach John Tortorella.
For the Flyers, this season introduces new leadership with Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO Dan Hilferty, president of hockey operations Keith Jones, and general manager Danny Briere. The organization is fully embracing the rebuilding process.
“We’re not trying to lose, but rather develop our players in a winning culture where they give their all every night,” Briere stated last month. “And I believe our fans will respect that.”
Unlike last year, the Flyers have had relatively good health leading up to the beginning of the season. This has resulted in difficult decisions between prospects and veterans, providing a “healthy” competition for the team’s rebuilding efforts, as described by Tortorella.
“Everyone thinks it’s the first year, but in my mind, last year was the start of the rebuilding process,” Tortorella commented five days ago. “I consider this the second year, and then we continue moving forward until a couple of years down the line when we add some free agents.”
After participating in team-bonding activities over the past two days, the Flyers will have practice sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to Columbus, Ohio. The regular season kicks off on Thursday, where they will face the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
Ultimately, the Flyers now need to finalize their lineup for opening night.
