After a narrow and challenging defeat to the top-ranked Ohio State, Rutgers football seems capable of competing in their remaining three games and potentially securing another win or even two. This is a sentiment shared by ESPN.
The loss against Ohio State brings Rutgers’ record to 6-3 (3-3 Big Ten).
For the first time this season, ESPN’s analytic measurement, FPI, predicts that Rutgers will win their season finale against Maryland. In the latest update after this weekend’s matches, ESPN gives Rutgers a 51.2 percent chance of beating Maryland in their last regular-season game.
Despite the loss, Rutgers has maintained their position at No. 44 in the national FPI rankings, which indicates the high quality of their opponent as well as their overall strong performance in the face of defeat. On the other hand, Maryland has dropped eight spots to No. 40 in the ESPN FPI rankings after their defeat against Penn State.
Maryland experienced the largest drop among all teams within the top 50 of the FPI rankings.
As for Rutgers, their next two games… well, according to ESPN FPI projections, the odds are not in their favor. All three of their remaining games are within the Big Ten conference.
The projected win/loss record for Rutgers is 7.0-5.0, which would be their best season since joining the Big Ten in 2014.
