Eric Cole keeps making birdies, Davis Thompson trying to win in backyard and Ludvig Aberg in hunt among RSM Classic first-round takeaways

Sea Island Resort is the first chapter of the story of PGA Tour’s top contender for Rookie of the Year honors, Eric Cole. Fifty years after his mother, Laura Baugh, won her award, Eric’s pursuing his own dream rookie season. Making eight birdies during the rain-delayed opening round, he scored 6-under 66 at the Sea Island Golf Club’s Plantation Course, as he seeks his first Tour title at the final of the 2022-23 wraparound season. Cole’s bullish rookie season was off to a good start, recording 13 top-25 finishes and earning nearly $5 million, making him a contender for the Rookie of the Year. His aggressive playstyle this season has seen him scoring a record 534 birdies.

The first round was delayed due to rains, which was a challenge for all participating players. Not many enjoyed playing under wet and tricky conditions, but for some like Davis Thompson, it was a comfort. Thompson grew up playing at the course as his father is the tournament director of the RSM Classic.

Ludvig Aberg, a professional for the first time at Sea Island Resort, also had a strong round on the Plantation Course. Even after scoring an eagle and three birdies, he was more excited to talk about Liverpool Football Club than his round. Similarly, Matt Kuchar and other players had their own stories to seize that day.
